Worried About the Weather for Your Cruise? So Is James Van Fleet

Most cruise traces have a big employees that features a deck crew, housekeeping, entertainers and extra. But just one has a chief meteorologist whose sole job is to trace the every day climate for a number of ships and about 150,000 passengers.

James Van Fleet joined Royal Caribbean International two years in the past, after greater than twenty years as a meteorologist on tv and radio. As the first full-time, on-staff chief meteorologist for each the firm and the cruise trade, a place he calls a “dream job,” he travels round the world and works with cruise employees to maintain vacationers protected.

He has helped dozens of captains navigate by storms and heavy rain, fog and different inclement climate. His job additionally entails forecasting the climate weeks forward, to assist the firm’s shoreside and shipboard groups resolve if they need to cancel, reroute or reschedule cruises.

Mr. Van Fleet spoke with The Times about rising up round tornadoes, his odd work hours and the way the climate in the Bahamas may have an effect on the 135-foot waterslide at Royal Caribbean’s newly reopened non-public island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

I grew up in Tulsa, Okla., the place the climate can actually kill you. When we’ve twister days, the state shuts down. Everyone pays consideration. It’s in my DNA. I began in some radio stations, then I labored behind the scenes in tv. I did some storm chasing and obtained on tv, working for Fox, ABC and CBS associates. A recruiter reached out about this job.

I’m up in the center of the night time monitoring Australia and Asia. In the early morning, I’m monitoring Europe, and through regular workday hours I’m taking a look at the Caribbean. It by no means stops. It’s the exact opposite of a nine-to-five job. I get to work with folks on the different aspect of the globe.

You need to have present climate knowledge to make a forecast. You obtained to know what’s occurring proper now. For instance, what’s occurring in Europe now and what shall be occurring in Europe later?

This is the most difficult forecasting I’ve ever executed. It’s trickier than simply ‘is it going to be windy or is it going to rain?’ The stakes are fairly excessive, so I by no means step away from the knowledge for too lengthy. I must know what’s been occurring somewhere else at totally different occasions. Several occasions a day at hours that make no sense to anyone, I’m taking a look at knowledge. I’m all the time asking myself: What did the climate knowledge say a day or two days in the past?

There’s a giant waterslide and due to its peak, we’ve to watch out about monitoring lightning. There’s additionally a giant balloon trip that takes folks as much as 450 ft and we’ve to actually take into consideration the wind there.

I’ve been on 24 of the 26 Royal Caribbean International ships. It takes each little bit of the time to get to each one and construct relationships. I regulate the ships of our sister traces, however I’m extra concerned with these 26.

I work with two dozen meteorologists who’ve gone to the academy and gotten fundamental meteorology expertise. They are nice. Part of my job is to assist educate them on issues they didn’t be taught in the academy.

This company walked the walk when it realized things were going in a direction that put guests in trouble. It made the changes to address that. The accidents are not something we’re proud of, and changes have been made to help us keep that from happening again.

Less than a year after those accidents, I was hired. And obviously this is a dream job for me, but it also speaks to the company prioritizing safety. A cruise ship is a city at sea. There’s going to be a fender bender, a stubbed toe. But the sooner you can catch issues, the sooner you can make adjustments. My job is to help catch things early.

You’d think so, but no. The smaller stuff like fog can be harder to deal with, harder to forecast than hurricanes, typhoons and tropical storms.
