Involved in the drug trade, D gets sent to London in the ’80s, where he reunites with his childhood girlfriend and their daughter. But when D encounters the man who killed his brother 10 years earlier, he decides to seek revenge. The Amazon Original film is based off Victor Headley’s 1992 novel of the same name. In The New York Times review, Jeannette Catsoulis wrote: “‘Yardie’ (the title is Jamaican patois for a gang member) has something to say about the way immigrants can become trapped in the loyalties and vendettas of their homelands.”
PENELOPE KEITH’S VILLAGE OF THE YEAR Stream on Acorn TV. Actress Penelope Keith hosts a competition show that likely wouldn’t be made anywhere but Britain: Keith, along with her team of three judges (an archaeologist, craft expert and garden designer), travel from village to village soaking in each destination’s charm and beauty. They partake in local events like custard pie-throwing contests, observe villagers who carry barrels through the mountains and visit surfing communities, all with the mission of finding the best village in Britain.
GRAND HOTEL 10 p.m. on ABC. Based on a telenovela and with Eva Longoria as executive producer, this new show revolves around the last family-owned hotel in Miami Beach. On the surface, Santiago Mendoza (Demián Bichir), the owner, his second wife Gigi (Roselyn Sanchez) and their children have the perfect life. But secrets and scandals lurk behind the facade. The drama is told as an upstairs/downstairs narrative: The story follow the lives of the staff of the Grand Hotel, including Ingrid (Anne Winters) and Jason (Chris Warren), as well as of those in charge.
2019 MTV MOVIE & TV AWARDS 9 p.m. on MTV. Zachary Levi hosts this year’s award show. Presenters include Aubrey Plaza, Daniel Levy, Jameela Jamil and Shameik Moore, and there will be performances by, among others, Lizzo and Bazzi. The films and shows that racked up the most nominations this year went to “RBG,” “Game of Thrones” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
