Morning Coffee Results in a $1,000 Fine and Expulsion From Venice


LONDON — The Rialto Bridge in Venice, the oldest of the 4 constructions spanning the Grand Canal in the Italian metropolis, has seen all of it.

But the sight of two German backpackers organising a journey range to make their morning espresso on the steps of the 400-year-old monument was an excessive amount of for a native resident, who promptly reported it to the police.

The vacationers from Berlin, an unidentified man and a girl ages 32 and 35, had been fined a whole of 950 euros (or $1,000) underneath guidelines launched in May to protect “decorum” in the town heart.
