When ethnically charged graffiti started showing in her city of Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nikolina Kulidzan paid little consideration. In 1992, she was a 12-year-old Serbian lady in love with a Croatian boy named Marko. She was unaware that her nation, and her budding relationship with Marko, can be torn aside by a brutal civil conflict.
On this week’s Modern Love podcast, the actor Joanna Kulig reads Ms. Kulidzan’s transferring essay, “A Kiss Deferred by Civil War.”
Ms. Kulig stars within the movie “Cold War,” in theaters now. Ms. Kulidzan is a author dwelling in Alexandria, Va., together with her husband. Stay tuned after the studying to listen to from Ms. Kulidzan and the Modern Love editor Daniel Jones.
