Augusta Health has but to welcome the first baby of 2019, following a busy finish to 2018 within the maternity ward.

As of three p.m. Wednesday, there hadn’t been any 2019 births on the Fishersville hospital. Augusta Health delivered seven infants on Dec. 31 and near 50 complete within the final two weeks — an unusually excessive quantity, stated Lisa Schwenk, director of public relations for Augusta Health.

Schwenk stated this is the first time in her eight-year tenure on the group hospital that they’d waited this lengthy for the first baby of a brand new yr. Last year’s first baby was delivered at 10 a.m.

Schwenk said she expected a baby would be delivered later Wednesday or early Thursday. In 2017, the hospital delivered 1,100 babies, according to its website.

WVIR-TV reported Tuesday that the maternity wards at the University of Virginia and Sentara Martha Jefferson hospitals also experienced a slower-than-usual day to start the new year, but their first babies of 2019 were delivered early Jan. 1.
